Karen Miranda Rivadeneira
(1983–Present)

Karen Miranda Rivadeneira is an artist and photographer, born in New York City but raised in Ecuador. Her collection “Other Stories/Historias Bravas,” is an exploration of the relationship between photography and memory. In the project, Rivadeneira enlists the help of her immediate family to restage childhood memories that were never recorded. The collection is an effort to fend off forgetting significant moments in her life, beyond well-documented events like holidays or graduation ceremonies. Rivadeneira says she chose memories that helped shape how she identifies and interacts with the world. In one, she stands motionless next to her mother while she feeds iguanas, capturing her childhood fear of the animals that roamed wild in the town of Guayaquil, Ecuador, where she grew up.
